Edinburgh City Region Few people are aware that for planning purposes the City Region is growing. Following from the Planning Bill, which was passed last year, a Strategic Development Plan Authority is to be set up. Why add yet another level of control, which will likely be even less accessible and accountable than Scottish Borders Council, when perfectly good ways of cooperating at a strategic level already exist? Because, some would say, a streamlined planning system can function more effectively without interference from local people. And that is precisely why Save Scott's Countryside wants a proper debate about being part of a Strategic Development Plan Authority. • Who will make up the Strategic Development Plan Authority? • How much will they cost? • What powers will they have? • To whom are they accountable? • And how do we get rid of them if we don’t like what they do? The real needs of Borderers must not be sidelined by centralist thinkers. The proposed grouping is City of Edinburgh Council; the Lothians Councils; Fife Council and Scottish Borders Council. Consultation is now open until 26 October 2007 and one of the specific questions is: “Do you support the proposed membership of the Strategic Development Planning Authorities and if not, why not?” Read the full consultation document on the Scottish Executive website. |

Local Plan Public Inquiry - An outstanding result for Save Scott’s Countryside ! Of the 9 sites contested by SSC 5 were scrapped and significant changes are proposed for 2 more. Given that not more than about ten sites were rejected across the Borders this really is a fantastic result and shows that well made arguments presented by complete amateurs can still win against the most highly-paid professionals if they are based on sound planning principles. . |
